Before I met you, is a series of new works by painter Caroline Wall, which address the memories of an individual who has become the artist’s life partner.

Who were you? - What did you do? - Who have you met? - What did you think? - What did you feel? - What did you see?

These were the questions posed as a personal and artistic investigation into the life he had lived before meeting his partner, the artist. In order to understand his answers, Wall was given access to a collection of his photo albums. In that intimate photography, she encountered many countries she had never been to, people she had never met and aspects of her partner she had not seen, and times she had only heard tell of.

She created from these photos a selection of abstract paintings, an attempt to navigate using ‚maps of memories‘ that were not her own. Using techniques of color-pouring and structurally painting with brushes, Wall intends to capture the feeling of the past that transforms constantly, as we move and change through time.

Her creative process is often intuitive, emerging from a meditative state and resulting in a free and abstract expression. Embracing color, texture and form, is fundamental to this expression. Her work travels between different states of mind and explores how abstraction occurs naturally in memory and dreams. This collection of paintings lay these maps bare, revealing the viewer‘s own unconscious reflections of the themes Wall presents; love, youth and longing, nature, and the very shapes of the subconscious mind.
